Found out I get to work on the building that inspired me to become an Architect.

Kinja'd!!!

Not only work on, but basically run the project. We’re renovating a room that used to be a little theater and turning it into some classrooms. The exciting part is that this will mean stripping the paint and insulation off of some glulams to reveal the gorgeous wood underneath.

Existing space, after some light preliminary demo:

Glulam elsewhere in the building:

Kinja'd!!!

THAT’S WHAT’S UNDER THAT PAINT!

Needless to say, I am extremely excited.

Also, today was my last day teaching second grade this year. The kids this year were so much better this year. There were a couple kids in this class who really amazed me.

Kinja'd!!!

Hopefully I’ll have some more Oppo-esque developments in the near future. But, I’m pretty happy with everything right now.

If I were to study architecture I’d be predominantly inspired by The City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela, or really anything by Teodoro González de Leon

At the time they wanted a blacked out theater. Luckily, in poking around today, it looks like they didn’t paint that gorgeous wooden deck above. They just fastened sound deadening to the bottom and painted that. So (hopefully) we’ll only have to strip the glulams.

I do love Eisenman’s work, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is still one of the most powerful memorials I’ve ever experienced. Teodoro González de Leon is yet another amazing Architect who grew out from working under Corbusier. Look up the work of Balkrishna Doshi, the winner of this year’s Pritzker Prize, he’s another good example of taking the Corbusian ideals and applying them through the lens of his native country’s Architectural traditions.

We have a whole book about Corbusier in the office, its reassuringly thick. I respect Gonzalez quite a lot, and had I studied journalism, I would’ve probably tried to get into Colmex, he designed the campus building and I personally think it’s very nice. I will look those architects too! I know little about the subject and it would be good to learn more, specially considering I work with a developer....

Corbusier is a solid place to start, he’s the father of modern Architecture. If you’re interested in Mexican Architects specifically Luis Barragán and his protege Ricardo Legorreta (Mexico seems to be the only place where post-modernist Architecture truly fits in and is beautiful). Expand to Latin America in general and you get Oscar Niemeyer, who is arguably the most successful of the modernists, and a personal favorite.

I thought I recognized that scca car. It was originally built by my uncle and cousin (George and Todd). I saw it in Ohio around 2001. It’s awesome to see it still out there killing it.

Awesome, I like Safdie’s stuff, my favorite is Habitat 67, probably just because I have such a soft spot for Montreal (and for the influence of Expo 67 on 20th century life). Congrats, that’s going to be a fun project.

Habitat 67 is one of my favorites of all time. The innovative use of prefab is still one of the most ambitious concepts to this day.

We were the Local Architect for this project back in the day, which is why we’re working on it again. My boss has great stories about working with Moshe.

Yeah it’s amazing in that it’s a prefab structure that is extremely desirable. Units regularly sell for seven figures, and prices keep going up.

LOL, I’ve heard Safdie is quite the character.

I get to look over a magazine called El Croquis because they also order it and it’s quite good.
